Professor Greta Dereymaeker, the first ever President elected for EFAS, has recently been chosen as Specialist of the Year in Belgium. Her outstanding dedication to Orthopedic Surgery was established when she was the first woman at the University of Leuven (KUL) to be awarded a diploma in Orthopedic Surgery in 1977.
During her practice, she developed the Foot and Ankle Surgery in Belgium, and since expanded abroad where she has devoted herself to humanitarian work in Africa and Asia, more specifically in the treatment of young children with Clubfeet disease, where she has operated on approximately 1500 patients.
Professor Greta Dereymaeker, is one of the few remaining surgeons in this field that hold tremendous experience and expertise. Clubfeet in Western countries are usually treated with conservative measures and treated in much earlier stages. However, in developing countries, the disease can be neglected and the necessity to treat them at a later stage leads to surgical action, reinforcing the importance of expertise in this field.
In 2003 she was proposed in pulpit in fundamental research in the biomechanics of foot and ankle.
